Default Cakes

Would it be ok with everyone if I used this thread to share pictures of cakes I have done? I've really gotten into decorating cakes since my kids were born & they keep giving me more challenging ideas. I have branched out into also doing cakes for my sisters' kids' birthdays. I know moms are always looking for ideas so I thought this would also help there. I am not looking to advertise as I just do them out of love (so far), but I want to make sure people are ok with it.

Default As long as the boss lady says ok.

I'll start with Monster Mutt (since this one is already uploaded). This was for my son's 4th birthday.

This was from Easter dinner with the in-laws. A double layer white cake with lemon pie filling between the layers.

Here is Lightning McQueen & SAlly from the movie CArs for my sister's kid's birthday (Brandon's 5th & Marissa's 3rd). I used the same pan for both (a preform of McQueen) but did some carving & relocated the front tire for Sally.

Oh I love the CARS ones. Great job! I actually remember you posting a pic of a Blue's Clues cake one time. It may have been for your son's first birthday. I know, random memory.....

Default As a little background...

I am not the most domestic type of gal (can't cook very well). I use box mix for all of my cakes but like to experiment by adding different things between layers when I stack them. I have also recently been experimenting with the mixes themselves by adding other liquids instead of water. So far I have tried orange juice (added just a slight tang), apple juice (not much effect) & melted some white chocolate into the batter (HUGE raves for this one).

People always ask me where I get my ideas. I tend to get my initial idea from my kids, I ask them what they want. Sometimes I tell them to think of something else but first I think about how I can translate their ideas into cake form. Once I get their ideas I look on the internet, usually googling images. This is part of why I wanted to do this thread, to help others who are looking for ideas.

My main words of advice to anyone is just try it. IF all else fails you can always run to the store for a cake at the last minute.

really cool. I love the cars cakes!
My sister is the 'cake baker' of my family, and has taken a few classes at Michael's (craft store). It's amazing what can be done with a boxed mix and some special ingredients!

Cool Cakes! So far, I haven't been brave enough to make one of B's birthday cakes and doubt I'll try this year! A local grocery store here makes FABULOUS cakes for about $18! It is worth my $18 to not have that stress!
