I am not the most domestic type of gal (can't cook very well). I use box mix for all of my cakes but like to experiment by adding different things between layers when I stack them. I have also recently been experimenting with the mixes themselves by adding other liquids instead of water. So far I have tried orange juice (added just a slight tang), apple juice (not much effect) & melted some white chocolate into the batter (HUGE raves for this one).
People always ask me where I get my ideas. I tend to get my initial idea from my kids, I ask them what they want. Sometimes I tell them to think of something else but first I think about how I can translate their ideas into cake form. Once I get their ideas I look on the internet, usually googling images. This is part of why I wanted to do this thread, to help others who are looking for ideas. My main words of advice to anyone is just try it. IF all else fails you can always run to the store for a cake at the last minute.

really cool. I love the cars cakes!
My sister is the 'cake baker' of my family, and has taken a few classes at Michael's (craft store). It's amazing what can be done with a boxed mix and some special ingredients!
