Default Reading

I received a newsletter from our school superintendent yesterday and wanted to share something very interesting with you guys. I'm just going to quote it.

"The most economical device to teach reading is already in your home. Children in Finland have the highest reading scores in the world and they use this device more than any other country- and it's free! It's closed-captioning on the TV. Turn it on by using the "menu" button on the remote to reach the "cc" area. Children unconsciously absorb the sight of the words and their sounds, making connections to how print is used."

I thought this was an excellent idea. Our is on now. It's going to take some getting used to but I seriously believe that it can't hurt to try!

Interesting! I do this all the time, actually! Partially so that I can still tell what's going on if the volume is low, and partially because I thought ds might pick up the words.

Neat!! Have to laugh too...Brett wanted to watch the Rudolph movie last night (the OLD one that comes on TV every now and then) and for some reason the CC came on when I put in the DVD -- I was just too lazy to fight the remote to turn it off! Maybe he can read "Have a Holly Jolly Christmas" now!

Last week, a teacher specializing in early childhood education came and talked to my MOPS group about helping your children to read and write - that's one thing that she mentioned - "educational" videos / shows are much better to encourage reading skills if they have words on the screen along with the talking!
