Heather, we get so dried out during the winter months. I had a cool mist humidifier, but the noise drove me insane at night. I had to get rid of that thing. We get that dry, hacking cough. I found it helps to put wet washcloths *folded into 1/2 then 1/2 again so it won't dry so fast* over 1/2 the vent in the bedrooms. It helps quite a bit, when me & E had a sinus thing going on I put Vap O Rub on the washcloth, it seemed to help. I also have a very thin plastic bowl that I fill with water that I sit on the vents when I don't do the washcloths. It doesn't do as well as a humidifier, but it gets rid of the dry hacking of the mornings.

.

Great idea...Zach has a croupy cough and I am trying the warm mist. We used to have pans of water around the house growing up. The washcloth/vicks combo sounds fantastic...I may have to give that a try

We keep ours at 66/67 at all times. However, we also have a wood stove in the basement that keeps things warm. When it's really cold, we spend a lot of our evenings down there and just come upstairs to eat and sleep. Neither of the kids really like pj's, but will wear them if it gets cold. They both have one of those really soft microplush blankets and their favorite thing is to sleep in their undies but put the blankets under the sheet so it's right next to their skin. It keeps them very snuggly and warm.

I'll have to remember that when it gets colder here. The kids would love that. We got snowed in last year(literally) for DAYS and it was AWFUL! I know that many of you live in colder climates than me, and we just got 3ft of snow, but in an area where snow is the exception, the whole town came to a screeching halt. We're already stocking up for a just in case. But during that time we had our (gas) fireplace going and the heat up near 70 and wearing sweaters. The downside of cookie cutter houses, made on the cheap/poor insulation.

Maybe i'll get a big fleece blanket for under our sheets too, but the kids have several already.

ETA: We're stocking up now, despite it being the exception, because we've already had snow about 5 minutes away from us. We're expecting a difficult winter again.

In the summer we kept the house cool (but still in the 70s) and he was always swaddled in a very light muslin blanket with a shirt & diaper. He always seemed pretty comfortable.

yeah I was wrapping him in a muslin with a singlet and nappy and he was so wet from sweat so we have ditched the muslin he is still sweaty I am having to change crib sheets every day as there is a pool of sweat where he sleeps :sigh: I am a very sweaty sleeper as well ... so I guess its genetics if I wake up cool I place a light sheet over him though

Oh here comes the devil....

Just kidding. I have always NOT liked the cold (funny since I was born & raised here in the mitten). When hubby & I got our house I told him that I was going to keep the house warm enough to be comfortable. He likes it a little on the cooler side so our comprimise is at 75. Our oldest has AWLWAYS kicked off her covers since she was an infant (like her dad) so I felt better keeping it warmer at night. Our younger one has always been a snuggly bug (like me) but he doesn't mind the warmth.

(just to give you an idea how warm I like it: I keep my trucks temp set at 78) <- that's me staying warm

I should clarify that 68/69 is only the setting because it gets so hot upstairs...heat rising and all that business. It's probably 75 up here right now, and it's set at 69.
